storm means some massive delays at sfo. >> roberta gonzales is at the airport for us now with more. how long are we talking? >> reporter: right now the rain has stopped. we have a little reprieve but winds have been problematic gusting up to 37 miles an hour. behind me is an empty runway. this is something that you should not be seeing at this time of the day. it should be filled with arriving and departure flights. right now we have one cancellation of an international plane but we have so many cancellations of arriving flights for monterey, from orange county, from santa barbara. and earlier today we had over 4 hour delays on arriving flights. i just went inside the terminal and took another look. it looks like we are still seeing delays up to 2 hours and 24 minutes on arriving flights. what the duty manager says is that even if we begin to pick up some of these rates of departing flights we'll still have problems now on arrivals because it takes a while to get these planes turned around after such a huge delay. so word of advice, if you are coming to sfo, it's advisable to call

showers and delays at sfo if you are head there is so be careful. we'll see plenty of delays there. things will taper off in the afternoon. around the country a good travel day into houston 81 degrees there. 75 in denver, 59 in chicago, afternoon hours we are going to see those temperatures running up mainly into the 60s again and it should be dry by the afternoon. but elizabeth, this morning, very, very wet. >> reports coming in from the chp mentioned flooding along the embarcadero. that right lane is blocked off as you are coming into san francisco right now as you approach mission. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. no big incidents so far this morning if you are heading into san francisco and crossing the bridge. fortunately traffic is light but this is one of the busiest travel days of the year. a lot of overnight roadwork is suspended but you will find it on the dumbarton bridge, stretches of 84 this morning. mass transit might be a great option. we'll have much more traffic coming up including a listing of some other spots we're seeing flooding across the bay a

francisco. we begin with at sfo. any flight delays? >> reporter: yeah. there are a quite a few. the airport is reporting more than 70 flight cancellations. there are a handful of flights that are on time. there are many delays. some last had more than an hour. there is a little break right now. the airport says expect delays throughout the day. rain and wind outside, passengers waiting and looking to see if their next flight is on time inside. >> i should have been on the 7:00 flight this morning. due to the weather, i'll be catching the 11:45 to dallas. >> former track legend jim heinz was supposed to be an earlier flight to texas. because of our weather in the bay, some scheduled events will have to wait. >> i had had some press conferences scheduled for this afternoon that would have to be put off until tomorrow. >> the rain and wind played a number on flight schedules at sfo. the faa issue add ground hold which cancelled about 73 flights as of noon and delayed several others. some being affected for more than 2 1/2 hours. >> rather than have aircraft circling in the sky, waiting

what you need to know before you head out the door. christie smith is out at sfo. mike inouye is checking your commute and we begin with meteorologist christina loren. how's it looking out there? >> well, it's getting hairier and hairier and it's going to get more active this afternoon into the evening. we've got a really steady wave of moisture on the way ready to hit the bay area. you want to give yourself plenty of time. you see that yellow embedded within the deep green. that's moderate, even heavy rainfall on the way to san jose as we head through the next 57 minutes. you know what that means, a slow morning drive. we'll check on the particulars with mike. he's already tracking a few things in just a moment. i want to talk about the nature of our first storm system. it's packing a lot of moisture, moving in from the south. the core will pass over the bay area as we head into the evening. the sun sets about 4:58 this time of year. as the sun goes down, the rain starts to increase. we'll e heavy periods of rain overnight and another system arrives as we head through late satur

sissel is keeping an eye on any potential delays that they may have at sfo. a good morning. >> could morning. you can see that we are shrouded in heavy fog out here. there are delays on are arriving flights. it is expected that there is a ground hold at some point which means that the planes will have to wait until the fog lifts to take off. it is mostly are arriving flights, somewhere between 45 minutes an hour. if you have someone flying into sfo today you should probably check ahead. the most likely are delayed. we will start saying delays on the departing flights it will start a ripple effect. the best advice, we always give it call ahead or get on line and check your flight status to see if you are affected. >> the big question sfo it is when will befall the left? >> no time soon as the answer. >> that is right daria of we do have a fog advisory for the san francisco bay. until 9:00 this morning. visibility is still compromise. is down to zero. three chance of a mile for oakland so drive with extra caution on 580 and the nimitz. there has been some improvement in the north bay a

were slick and the skies were dreary. hundreds of people were stranded at sfo because of flight delays and cancellations. take a look now at this graphic. on the left side, all those red and green arrows you see there, that's a typical day for air traffic at sfo. a lot of flights going in and out. on the right side, very still. pretty much nothing. and that's what happened today. nbc bay area's marianne favro joins us at sfo. marianne, is there a domino effect here? will today's cancellations impact flights tomorrow for people? >> reporter: you're absolutely right, raj. when planes can't get in on time, then they end up leaving later. today about 60 to 90 minutes was the average delay. and the big reason was the wind. because it was coming from the southeast, that forced the airport to actually change its runway configuration. and because of that, it cut in half the number of planes that could land here each hour. now most of the canceled flights were short-haul trips on the west coast to places like los angeles and san diego. 90 flights were canceled because many airlines decid

thanksgiving travel season already in full swing here at sfo this morning. what you should expect if you are flying today and how the wet weather may impact your plans. .Ñ . >>> more on a developing story in vallejo. a 6a-year-old is in the hospital in stable condition after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted allegedly by a 14-year-old boy. she was kidnapped at gun point in front of a store yesterday. the 14-year-old suspect apparently forced her to drive to a nearby location and beat her into unconsciousness. the victim was duct taped dumped in a ditch at hidden brook parkway and highway 80. people driving by sought victim and told police. the suspect called the victim's family demanding money for her safe return. investigators eventually tracked him down, booked him into the juvenile hall on multiple charges including attempted murder, carjacking and kidnapping for ransom. >> very nervous residents in one neighborhood this morning as the rain is moving in. they are still dealing last week's hillside collapse that caused a mudslide disaster and they hope it won't happen again.

see what we're dealing with here. look at that rain being whipped around by these strong winds. sfo reports gusts up to 54 miles per hour. and then below you can see some of those trees whipping around, as well. now, as you said, there was a lightning strike just west of the airport around 3 a.m. and we could expect some flight delays even cancellations making a headache for those travelers who had to deal with this on wednesday. this is the second of a series of storms rolling into the bay area and on wednesday, 36 departures and 37 arrivals were canceled. some flights were delayed up to 3.5 hours. so we are going to kept a close eye on the departure and arrival board here at sfo. but as you can see just by looking at me it's very windy a lot of rain and the storm will continue throughout the morning. at sfo, elissa harrington, cbs 5. >> thank you. >>> something in high demand around the bay area right now, sandbags. with nearly a foot of rain expected by the time this stormy weather ends, homes and businesses are putting the sandbags in place to keep the floodwaters out. and this
